Ritual Monday: the slow body butter ritual that starts the day in your own skin

There is a version of getting ready that happens quickly, efficiently, with your mind already on the day ahead. And there is another version: the one where you stay present, just for a moment, and let the act of caring for your skin be its own thing.

Body butter makes that second version easy. Not because it demands time, but because its texture slows you down. Thick, warm, unhurried. You cannot rush it through — and that is the point.

The ritual

After your shower, pat your skin almost dry. Leave it slightly damp — not wet, just not fully dry. Scoop a small amount of body butter, no larger than your thumbnail, and warm it between both palms until it softens and yields.

Start at your shoulders. Press inward, not outward — press rather than rub, so the warmth has somewhere to go. Work down through your arms, the inside of your wrists, across your chest and belly. Take one slow breath before you move to your legs. Notice what you smell. Let the bergamot surface first, bright and clarifying. Then the rose geranium settles in, softer and more grounded. By the time you reach your calves, you have spent about two minutes entirely with yourself.

That is the whole ritual. Two minutes. One product. No screen, no podcast, no task list. Just skin, scent, and the quiet before the day opens.

What you are smelling, and why it matters

Bergamot is one of the few citrus oils that leans inward rather than outward. It clears without agitating. Rose geranium sits between floral and herbal — balancing, neither too sweet nor too green. Patchouli, used in small amounts, adds depth and a kind of rootedness: the note that tells the nervous system the ground beneath you is solid.

Together in a base of coconut oil and shea, they absorb slowly enough that the scent stays with you through the ritual and into the first part of the morning. The Bliss Body Butter carries exactly this blend — formulated in Bali, tested against tropical heat and humidity, and built for the kind of use that happens daily, not occasionally.

If you already have a face ritual in place, this pairs well with it. Take a look at the Balinese facial massage with face oil for the head-to-toe version of a slow morning.

Start this week

You do not need more time. You need two minutes you have already been using, redirected. Pat dry, warm the butter, press it in, breathe. The day will still be there. Your skin will be ready for it.
