Refill Friday: recyclable was never the same as recycled
Here is a truth we do not say often enough: recyclable was never the same as recycled.
Worldwide, only around nine percent of all plastic waste ever produced has actually been recycled. The rest sits in landfill, drifts into rivers and oceans, or gets burned. The little triangle on a bottle tells you what a material could theoretically become, not what will happen to it. Most personal care plastic, especially the small pump bottles and squeeze tubes our industry loves, never makes it into a working recycling stream at all. It is too small, too mixed with other materials, or simply not worth a facility’s time to sort.
This is not a reason for despair. It is the reason refill exists.
A refill station does not ask a piece of plastic to be virtuous after the fact. It removes the plastic from the equation the first time, and the second, and every time after that. The same glass or aluminum vessel comes back to us again and again, and the ingredient inside gets replenished rather than repackaged. No sorting facility has to get it right. No truck has to carry it anywhere new.
We built our refill program in Bali on this exact logic: care that does not depend on someone else’s good intentions three steps down the supply chain. Every refill is one fewer bottle asking to be recycled, and one more small proof that the honest fix was simpler than the clever one.
This week’s small act of rebellion: before you toss a container in the recycling bin out of habit, ask whether it could be refilled instead. If you are near one of our refill stations, bring your empties in. If you are not, save one vessel and reuse it for something else in your home. Refill, reuse, rebel. It is not a slogan. It is the actual math.
