Three well-used amber glass bottles on a weathered teak shelf in morning light

Sunday Reflection: enough is a decision, not a shortage

Most of the beauty industry runs on one quiet assumption: that you do not have enough yet. One more serum, one more step, one more limited edition. We have been making things by hand in Bali since 1989, and we have come to believe the opposite is closer to the truth. Most of us already have enough. The harder, more useful skill is noticing it.

Look at a bathroom shelf with honest eyes. There is usually one bottle we reach for every day, one or two we use when we remember, and a back row of things bought on a hopeful afternoon and opened twice. The back row is not a failing. It is evidence of how well we are sold to. It also tells us something useful: the products that actually do the work in our lives are few, and we already know which ones they are.

Enough is not the same as less for its own sake. A shelf of three products, used to the last drop, is not a minimalist performance. It is a working routine. Skin responds to consistency far more than to novelty, and a short routine is easier to keep through a busy week, a long flight, or a change of season. We wrote about this more practically in our guide to skinimalism, where the test is simple: does each product do a job nothing else on the shelf already does?

There is a quieter reason too. Every product we finish is one less half-full bottle heading to landfill, and every bottle we refill instead of replacing is a container that keeps working. In 2025, our refill customers saved 2,245 bottles from landfill. They did it by using what they had and coming back to fill it again, not by buying more. If you want to build a shelf that works this way, our guide to a zero waste skincare routine walks through it one product at a time.

So this week’s reflection is one small question, asked before the next purchase: what do we already own that we have not finished? Use that first. Give it a fair chance, morning after morning, and notice how it feels on the skin when it is not competing with six other things. Then, when it runs out, choose the next one with intention.

Enough is not a shortage. It is a decision, made calmly, that what is already here deserves our attention. What you give, you get back, and that includes the care we give to the things already on the shelf.
