Connection Thursday: the team in Gianyar who decide when a batch is ready

Connection Thursday is when we step back from ingredients and talk about people. We have introduced the makers who blend and pour by hand, the women of Munti Gunung, and the family that has kept this going since 1989. Today we want you to meet the people who stand between the mixing room and your door: the team in our own factory in Gianyar.

For most of our 35 years, making in Bali meant working around limits. This year we finished a long local-licensing process and opened a factory of our own. It holds a small quality-control lab, a mixing and filling room, a packaging line, and a shipping floor, all under one roof with solar panels above it. More than 30 people from the surrounding area work there.

Why the lab sits next to the mixing room

No two harvests are quite the same. A coconut oil pressed in the wet season can look and smell a little different from one pressed in the dry season. A butter can set softer on a humid week. A hand-blender notices these things by instinct. A lab lets us notice them on purpose, before a batch is bottled rather than after it reaches you.

So a batch has to answer a few quiet questions first. Does it look the way it should? Does it smell the way it should? Does it feel right on skin? Does it match the batch before it? When the answer is no, it waits. Waiting costs us time. Shipping something we are unsure of would cost far more in trust.

What changes when it all happens in one place

  • Fewer hand-offs. The person who checks a batch can walk ten steps and talk to the person who mixed it.
  • Shorter distances. Oils, butters, and bottles travel across a room, not across an island.
  • Local work. The skills of formulating, checking, filling, and packing stay in Gianyar, with the people who live there.
  • Clear accountability. If something is wrong, there is no supplier to blame. It is ours to fix.

None of this replaces the human hand. It protects it. Small batch only means something if every batch is cared for in the same way, and that care now has a home with its own lab bench, its own light, and its own team.

The takeaway

Quality is not a stamp on a label. It is a group of people who are allowed to say “not yet.” The next time you open a jar from our shop, take a breath and picture the bench in Gianyar where someone held that batch to the window light and decided it was ready. That pause is part of what you are holding.
