Refill Friday: the travel-size bottle is a refill you do at home

Every holiday season, the same small aisle fills up near the checkout: shampoo, conditioner, and body wash shrunk down to travel size. Each one is used for a week, maybe two, then left in a hotel bin or forgotten at the bottom of a bag. A travel bottle does not need to be bought. It is simply a refill we do at home, before we leave.

Why the mini bottle is the least honest bottle on the shelf

Shrink a bottle, and the packaging grows in proportion to what it holds. A tiny bottle carries a cap, a label, and a wall of plastic around a few sips of product. It is also one of the hardest things to recycle, because small items tend to slip through the sorting lines at recycling plants and end up as waste.

Some places have already drawn a line. California’s AB 1162 stopped hotels with more than 50 rooms from handing out personal-care products in plastic bottles under six ounces from January 2023, and smaller lodgings followed in 2024. Bulk dispensers took their place. When a hotel can make that change, a toiletry bag can too.

How to build a travel kit that refills

  • Keep one set of small bottles for good. Three sturdy 100ml containers cover shampoo, conditioner, and body wash, and most airline carry-on rules accept that size.
  • Decant from your full-size bottle. Fill the minis the night before you pack, straight from the bottle you already use at home.
  • Fill to about 80%. Air pressure changes in flight, so a little headroom keeps the cap from weeping into your bag.
  • Label with tape, not stickers. A strip of masking tape and a pen tells you what is inside and peels away cleanly before the next trip.
  • Bring them home empty, then clean and dry them. They wait in the drawer for the next journey, ready to fill again.

Your full-size bottle becomes the source, and the minis become the vessel. Our Tea Tree Shampoo 230ml and Hydrating Conditioner 230ml decant easily into travel bottles, so the same ritual comes with you wherever you go. Before the first fill, give each mini the five-minute clean and dry reset. If you are still choosing which bottles to keep, start with the containers already in your kitchen.

The takeaway: a travel size is a habit, not a product. Buy the small bottles once, fill them from home, and carry them back empty. Refill, reuse, rebel, even in a carry-on.
