Sunday Reflection: newer is not the same as better

Every season brings a new must-have. A new serum, a new step, a new ingredient with a new name. The message underneath is always the same: what you have now is no longer enough.

This Sunday, we would like to offer a quieter thought. Newer is not the same as better. Often the most caring thing we can do for our skin is to keep doing what already works.

Skin keeps its own time

Skin does not move at the speed of a product launch. As we wrote on a recent Wednesday, skin renews itself on a rhythm of roughly four weeks, and that rhythm slows as we get older. A new product needs at least that long before it can show us anything honest.

So when we switch every few weeks, we never actually learn what is helping. If something stings, we cannot tell which bottle caused it. If something improves, we cannot tell which bottle to thank. And every new product is one more reason for a patch test that takes days to answer. Constant change turns care into guesswork.

What staying teaches

Staying with something is how we come to know it. We notice how an oil feels in the dry months and in the humid ones, how much we really need, and how our skin answers over a season, not over a weekend. Wisdom is built through repetition, and that knowledge belongs to us, not to a trend cycle.

We have been crafting in Bali since 1989, and some of the ingredients we reach for most, like virgin coconut oil, are ones Balinese households have trusted for generations. They have stayed because they keep earning their place. That is a different kind of proof than novelty can offer.

Change for a reason

None of this means never changing. Skin changes with age, climate, and health, and care should follow. A product that irritates should go. The difference is the reason. Changing because our skin asked for it is care. Changing because an advert asked for it is something else. It is the same idea behind enough being a decision, not a shortage.

If you are looking for one steady step to stay with, our Natural Face Serum is a simple blend of argan oil, jojoba oil, virgin coconut oil, cocoa butter, and essential oils. Two or three drops pressed into damp skin each evening, every evening, for a month. Then see what your skin tells you.

This week, before buying something new, ask one question. What is already working, and have we given it enough time? We don’t chase trends. Some of the best care is simply the care we keep.
