Ritual Monday: apply your body oil to damp skin, before you dry off
There is a small window, right after you step out of the shower, when your skin is still warm and holding water. Most of us reach for a towel and rub it all away. This week, try pausing there instead.
Pat yourself down until you are damp, not dry. Then press your body oil into skin that still carries a little moisture. That is the whole ritual, and the reason it works is quietly simple.
Oil does not add water to your skin. It seals it. When you smooth oil over damp skin, you trap the water that is already there before it can evaporate into the air. Dry your skin fully, then oil, and you are sealing over a surface that has mostly given its moisture back to the room. Damp skin first, then oil, and you keep it.
There is a slower gift in this too. Warming a few drops between your palms, then pressing them along your arms and legs with long, unhurried strokes, turns two minutes into a genuine pause. No screen, no rush, just your hands, your breath, and the scent rising off warm skin. It is care you can feel, not care you perform.
A note on temperature. Very hot water strips the skin’s own oils, so the moisture you are trying to trap is already depleted before you begin. Warm, not scalding, leaves more for the oil to hold. Your skin will tell you the difference within a week.
