Ritual Monday: the 60-second pulse-point ritual before the first email

Monday mornings tend to start in the inbox. Before the first message gets opened, there is a 60-second ritual that gives the week a different first note: one roll of essential oil, two pulse points, and three slow breaths.

Why pulse points, and why scent first

Pulse points are simply places where blood vessels sit close to the skin: the inner wrists, behind the ears, the base of the throat. The skin there is a little warmer, and warmth lifts aromatic compounds off the carrier oil, so the scent opens slowly through the morning instead of fading in minutes.

Scent is also the one sense that travels to the brain’s emotional centers without a detour. That is why a familiar aroma can mark a transition faster than a thought can. Repeat the same scent at the same moment each Monday and it becomes a cue: this is where the week begins.

In Bali, fragrance has always marked thresholds. A stick of dupa is lit before work begins, and a flower is tucked into the daily offering. The roller is a small, portable version of the same idea.

The 60-second Monday ritual

  1. Before you open the laptop, sit down and put both feet on the floor. Leave the phone face down.
  2. Roll one short line behind each ear, or on the inner wrists if a sleeve will cover them. Do not rub your wrists together; that crushes the top notes. Press them lightly instead.
  3. Cup your hands near your face and take three slow breaths. Name one thing you want this week to hold.
  4. Then open the inbox.

One honest note about the sun

Many citrus blends, ours included, contain whole bergamot peel oil, which can make skin react to direct sunlight. So choose skin that stays out of the sun for the next 12 hours: behind the ears, the nape of the neck under your hair, or covered wrists. We explain why in our guide to bergamot essential oil and the sun, and our essential oil roller guide covers how to read a roller label.

Choosing the scent for the week

For a bright start, our Pure Energy Essential Oil Roller blends bergamot, sweet orange, rosemary, and lemongrass in jojoba oil. If Mondays already feel loud, the Santi Essential Oil Roller, with lavender, rose geranium, and cananga, sets a softer tone. Neither one will clear your inbox. What it does is give you one minute that belongs to you before the week asks for anything.

If you want to go further, we wrote about which essential oils support focus, and last Monday’s palm-warming ritual uses the same idea with body oil. Same pattern each time: small, repeated, and yours.

This morning, try it once before the first email. Next Monday, the scent will remember for you.
