Refill Friday: start with the bottle you empty fastest

When we decide to start refilling, the instinct is to overhaul the whole shelf at once. New bottles, new labels, a weekend of decanting. It looks lovely in a photo, and it often fades by the second month. A quieter approach does more: begin with the one bottle in the house that runs out first.

Why turnover matters more than the label

A bottle we finish every two weeks becomes 26 empties a year. A face serum we finish every three months becomes four. Both count, but they do not count equally. Refill the fast one, and that single habit keeps more bottles in circulation than four slow-moving swaps put together.

In most homes the fastest bottles live by the sink, not on the vanity: dish soap, hand wash, body wash, and laundry liquid. They are also the products most often sold in single-use plastic. That makes them the place where a refill does the most honest work, and the place where greenwashing hides most easily behind a pretty serum jar.

Find your fastest bottle

  • Watch the bin for two weeks. Whichever empty shows up most often is your answer. No spreadsheet required.
  • Mark the start date. A strip of masking tape on the next bottle tells you how long one bottle really lasts in your home.
  • Refill that one first. Keep the bottle, clean and dry it, then fill it at a refill station or from a larger container at home.
  • Add the next swap only when the first feels automatic. A habit that sticks matters more than a shelf that looks finished.

Dish soap is often the first bottle to empty in a busy kitchen, so our Natural Dish Soap 500ml is a sensible place to begin. Before any refill, give the bottle the five-minute clean and dry reset. For the swaps that follow, our refill-first guide to a plastic free bathroom walks through the bathroom shelf, and our guide to natural cleaning products covers the rest of the house.

The takeaway: refill culture is not about owning the right shelf. It is about the bottle we reach for most. Start there, count the empties you no longer make, and let the next swap follow in its own time. Refill, reuse, rebel, one fast bottle at a time.
