drops of golden face oil resting in an open palm beside a glass dropper bottle

Ritual Monday: warm the oil in your hands first, then press it in

Most mornings, the oil goes straight from bottle to face. A few drops, a quick rub, and on with the day. It works. But there is a small ritual that turns those few drops into a moment worth having, and it costs about 10 seconds. Warm the oil in your hands first. Then press it in.

Why warming matters

Facial oils are a blend of botanical lipids, and lipids move more freely when they are warm. Cup three or four drops in your palms, rub them together slowly, and the oil loosens, spreads thinner, and carries its aroma up to meet you. Cold oil sits on the surface and asks to be dragged around. Warm oil is ready to be received.

There is a second reason, and it is the quieter one. The pause to warm the oil is a pause for you. Palms together, the scent of the botanicals rising, the morning slowing down for a few seconds before it speeds up.

Press, do not drag

When the oil is warm, lay your palms flat against your face and press gently: cheeks, forehead, jaw, and the sides of the nose. Pressing lets the skin take the oil in without the tug and pull of rubbing, which is kinder to the delicate skin around the eyes and along the jaw. Finish by cupping your hands over your nose and taking one slow breath.

Make it yours

This works with any face oil, and it works just as well with a body oil after a warm shower, when skin is soft and still slightly damp. If you are choosing an oil to build the ritual around, our guide to face oil versus body oil walks through which does which job. And if evenings are your moment, the after-bath minute is the same idea, carried to the end of the day.

Warm it, press it, breathe once. That is the whole ritual, and it will be waiting for you again tomorrow.
