Connection Thursday: the coconut farmers of Bali behind every body care ritual
Most coconut oil begins its life in a plantation where the pickers, pressers, and packagers rarely meet the brand whose label ends up on the shelf. The commodity system is efficient. It is also anonymous.
Utama Spice does it differently.
Our cold-pressed coconut oil comes through the Aluan Partnership, a sourcing relationship built to keep the supply chain local, direct, and accountable. The farmers we work with grow Bali coconuts on small plots, harvest by hand, and press using cold-processing methods that preserve the oil’s fatty acid profile without bleaching or deodorising it into something neutral.
Why cold-pressed matters
Commercially refined coconut oil is treated with heat and often chemical solvents to extend shelf life and standardise colour and scent. The result is a consistent oil, but one stripped of many of the phytonutrients and natural aromatics that make unrefined coconut oil a skincare workhorse.
Cold-pressed, virgin coconut oil retains its natural lauric acid content, its subtle warm scent, and the trace compounds that support skin barrier function. When you pick up a body oil or face balm from our range, that coconut oil base has been through almost nothing except the press.

If you want to understand how the base oil shapes a finished product, our piece on coconut oil vs illipe butter goes deeper on what each carrier brings to skin.
The community beneath the oil
The Aluan Partnership was built on a simple idea: that a brand sourcing from Bali should source in a way that strengthens Bali. The farmers receive fair pricing for their harvest. The arrangement rewards quality over volume. And the community gains stable income not tied to commodity price swings.
This is what sustainable sourcing means in practice: not a claim on a label, but a relationship where everyone in the chain can see what they are connected to.
What you are holding
When you use a Utama Spice body butter, face oil, or hair oil, you are holding the output of that relationship. The coconut oil inside was cold-pressed in Bali, from fruit grown by people who know who their buyer is and what the oil will become.
That is the kind of care we believe personal care should carry.
