Connection Thursday: the customers who keep coming back to refill, and what they have taught us
We talk often about the people who grow, gather, and blend for Utama Spice. The women of Munti Gunung. The Forestwise cooperative in Kalimantan. The small team in our Ubud workshop. There is another part of the community that shapes the brand just as much, and is easier to miss. The people who carry their bottles back.
The refill regulars
Some of them have been refilling the same amber coconut oil bottle for four years. Some bring jars their mothers passed down, scuffed and labelled in faded ink, ready for the next round. One regular brings the same glass spritz bottle to our refill counter every six weeks, the cap scratched soft from being unscrewed so many times. We have come to know their faces, their refills, sometimes their dogs.
They are not a marketing segment. They are neighbours, travellers, parents, retirees, students. What they share is a small, durable habit: when a bottle empties, it does not go in the bin. It goes in a bag, and back to the counter.
What they have taught us
Over the years, the refill regulars have taught us things a focus group could not.

That a wide-shouldered jar matters when you scoop body butter on a humid morning. That 100 ml is the right size for a face oil, not 50 ml or 250 ml, because that is the rhythm of a household. That carrying a jar of incense home in a rattan bag feels different than carrying it in plastic, and the difference is not small. They were the first to ask for unscented versions of our cleansers, years before fragrance-sensitive became a category. They told us when a closure leaked. They told us when a label peeled in steam. They were patient teachers.
They have also held us to our refill commitment in ways we needed. In 2025 alone, we counted 2,245 bottles saved from landfill through our refill stations across Bali. That number is not ours. It is theirs, written one return at a time.
A small invitation
