Ritual Monday: give your face wash a full minute
Most of us wash our faces in about 15 seconds: a splash, a quick rub, a towel, done. This Monday, try giving the same face wash a full minute. You don’t need a new product or an extra step. You just slow down a step you already take twice a day.
Why a minute makes a difference
A cleanser needs a little time to work. Sunscreen, the day’s oil, and city dust don’t all lift away the moment soap touches skin. They loosen as the lather moves over the face. Many skin therapists suggest about 60 seconds of gentle massage for this reason. A rushed wash tends to leave residue behind, and then we scrub harder or wash twice to make up for it.
Water temperature matters too. Hot water strips away more of the fats that keep the skin barrier comfortable. Lukewarm water cleans just as well and is kinder. If your evenings start with heavier sunscreen or makeup, our guide to double cleansing explains when a first oil step helps.

The one-minute face wash
- Wet your face with lukewarm water. Hold your cupped hands to your skin for one breath before you begin.
- Work a small amount of face wash between your palms until it softens, then press it onto your cheeks, forehead, and chin.
- Massage in slow circles for about a minute, using light pressure. Spend a little longer beside the nose, along the hairline, and under the jaw, where cleansing is most often rushed. Keep the lather away from your eyes.
- Rinse with several handfuls of lukewarm water, more than feels necessary, until your skin no longer feels slippery.
- Pat dry with a clean towel instead of rubbing, and leave the skin a little damp.
Your face is ready for whatever comes next. If that’s a serum, warm it in your palms and press it in, the way we described in our warm-palms face ritual. The two together take less than three minutes.
What we reach for
Our Serenity Face Wash is a gentle cleanser made with coconut oil, aloe vera, and seaweed extract. It carries a calm scent of patchouli, lavender, and geranium, and a minute of breathing it in is a good part of the ritual. For something a little brighter, the Bliss Botanical Face Wash is its uplifting sibling. If your skin reacts easily, patch-test any new cleanser on your inner arm first, and see our sensitive skin routine.
This week, count to 60. Do it once a day, morning or evening, whichever feels less rushed. By Friday your hands will know the length without counting, and the wash will feel like care instead of a chore.
