Connection Thursday: the customers who carried Bali home, and wrote back to tell us

Connection Thursday is when we step back from ingredients and talk about people. So far we have introduced the makers who blend and pour by hand, the person who remembers your refill, and last week the team in Gianyar who decide when a batch is ready. Today we turn to the people at the other end of that chain: the ones who use what we make, and who sometimes take a minute to write back.

We went back through the reviews left on our shop over the years. The star ratings were not what stood out. What stood out was how often a review turned out to be a small story about a place.

A scent that travels home

Carol tried our lemongrass liquid soap on a trip to Bali and now orders it from the United States. Debbie, writing from Australia, said the only trouble with her natural face serum was that it ran out. Emma reached for our Senja body mist before yoga, to bring her mind back to the island where she first smelled it. Ashley Rose wrote that the same mist smells “of sacred, peaceful Bali mornings.”

One review surprised us more than the others. Alycia did not find our Temple Spice incense in Ubud. She found it in the gift shop at Chalice Well in Glastonbury, England, while on holiday, and described a careful balance of spice, sweetness, something close to floral, and a hint of resin. A stick rolled in Bali, burning quietly in a small English town.

Why we read every one

Small batch works in both directions. We make in small amounts so we can notice when something changes, and the same is true of listening. A large brand counts reviews. We can still read them one by one, and they tell us things a lab bench cannot: which scent someone reaches for before practice, which bottle runs out first, which product earned a place on a shelf in a country we have never shipped a pallet to.

They also keep us honest. A kind review is not clinical evidence, and we never treat it as one. It is evidence of something smaller and just as real: a ritual made in Bali has found a place in someone’s ordinary day, thousands of kilometres away.

The takeaway

Connection does not stop at the factory door or the refill counter. It continues each time someone opens a bottle somewhere else in the world and is reminded, for a breath or two, of a morning in Bali. If something we make has found its way into your routine, we would love to hear about it. Leave a few words on its product page in our shop, or simply reply to one of our emails. These notes shape what we make next.
