Sunday Reflection: clarity, not complexity
Sunday is our quiet day, the one we keep for looking back before we move forward. This week the thought that kept returning was a simple one: clarity is not the same as complexity, and the two are often confused. A long ingredient list can look like effort. A short one can look like something is missing. We have come to believe the opposite is true.
When Melanie began making products in Bali in 1989, she worked with what grew nearby and what generations of local healers already trusted. Coconut oil. Kukui. Aloe. A handful of botanicals, understood deeply rather than a cupboard of ingredients understood loosely. That constraint was not a limitation. It was the whole method, and it still is.
Why we keep the list short
Every ingredient we add is a promise we have to keep. It has to earn its place, do something the skin can feel, and come from a source we can stand behind. If we cannot say plainly why something is in a formula, it does not go in. That rule does more work than any marketing line, because it means a label you can read in one breath, and a product that behaves the way it says it will.
Complexity is easy to manufacture and hard to trust. Clarity asks more of us. It means saying no to the ingredient that sounds impressive but does little, and yes to the one that has quietly worked for decades. It is slower, and it is honest, and over 30 years it has held.
A small practice for today
If you have a spare few minutes this Sunday, turn over one thing on your shelf and read its list, all the way through. Notice how much of it you recognise, and how much you are simply trusting on faith. You do not need to throw anything out. The point is only to look, the way we learned to look at labels when we wrote about what actually soothes a sunburn and about calming breakouts without a twelve-step routine. Clarity is a habit you can build one label at a time.
